Identify the type of leather on your bag before you start cleaning.
Not all leathers can be cleaned in the same way. That's why you first need to identify the type of leather your bag is made of:
-
- Smooth leather : the most common type of leather, but also in our store, this type is easy to care for.
-
- Suede or nubuck : more delicate, it requires specific products.
-
- Patent leather : Although fairly resistant, it is sensitive to scratches.
-
- Grained leather : has an irregular texture that can trap dust.
-
- Synthetic leather : and sometimes you think you're carrying a leather bag that turns out to be imitation leather
Sometimes the easiest thing to do is simply consult the label or manufacturer's documentation on your leather bag for specific recommendations.
4 essential cleaning steps for your leather bag
Remove dust
Use a soft cloth or soft bristle brush to reach the hardest-to-reach areas, such as under buckles or pocket folds. Gently wipe over the entire leather surface to remove dust particles. A special damp leather wipe can also be used to remove certain traces of surface dirt. Be careful, however, not to use just any wet wipe, as it may alter the finish of your bag.
Removes light to stubborn stains
For light stains, simply mix a mild soap, such as Marseille soap or glycerine soap, with warm water and dampen a clean, soft cloth. All you have to do is gently rub the whole surface of your leather to avoid streaks. Use gentle circular movements, without rubbing, to avoid damaging your bag. In case of doubt, don't hesitate to carry out a test on a hidden part of your bag beforehand, to avoid any unpleasant surprises!

If your leather is a little more stained, you can mix white vinegar and hot water equally well. Soak your clean cloth in this mixture and rub gently to remove dirt without damaging your leather. Don't forget to rinse your bag with a second cloth soaked in clear, warm water. Leave to dry in the open air, away from any source of heat. And don't hesitate to apply only to a small area for test purposes.
Remember, too, that each task is treated differently, but always with delicacy, otherwise you risk making the situation worse:
-
- Water stain : Let air dry, then rub gently with a dry cloth.
-
- Grease stain: Apply talcum powder or cornstarch, leave for several hours, then brush gently.
-
- Ink stain : Use a special leather cleaner, or a cotton bud soaked in cleansing milk.

5 mistakes to avoid when cleaning your leather bag
To preserve your leather bag, never use too much water, as leather absorbs moisture and can become deformed... which is difficult to recover once disaster strikes. Avoid abrasive products or multi-purpose chemical cleaners that could damage the surface. And above all, don't neglect hydration: leather that is not nourished becomes rigid and can crack.
Finally, avoid exposing your bag to direct sunlight or heat for long periods, as this will dry it out and fade its colors. Instead, store your leather bag in a fabric cover to protect it from light and dust when you're not using it. This way, it'll stay with you for decades and remain your shining companion object.
A well-maintained leather bag can last for years and still look good. By following these tips, you'll preserve not only its appearance, but also its value. For best results, always use the right products and adopt a regular care routine. And remember to store your leather bag in a fabric cover to protect it from light and dust when you're not using it. And when you take it everywhere with you... above all... don't overload it, as this can deform it or, worse still, cause the shoulder strap or a fastening to break.
