Why transhumance?

Transhumance is the migratory movement of a herd at a specific time of year.
Cows, sheep and even horses can be affected.
The summer grazing period is when cattle move from the plains to the mountains.
Its purpose is to protect them from the high temperatures of summer, by taking them to cooler altitudes. It's a tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages.

Preserving spaces

Transhumance is also an excellent way of keeping the shepherd's meadows in reserve, so that when they are mown, the sheep have a supply of hay for the winter.
It is also a natural way of maintaining wild green spaces. By grazing as they pass, the ewes remove bushes that would otherwise be too abundant.

Transhumance, an adventure to be experienced

It's an opportunity for tourists and nature lovers to discover breathtaking landscapes, while following the herds along the drailles and carraires.
The latter are the wide paths used by animals to climb up to the estives (=mountain pastures used in summer).

Transhumance, a celebration

It's a chance to meet the shepherds and their livestock. In the villages, numerous festivities are organized to create a lively atmosphere. It's a time for exchanging and sharing knowledge, in total immersion. (Link)

In our workshop, we make the traditional bag worn by transhumant shepherds, whose emblematic shape dates back to the 18th century. Originally, this bag was cut from sheep leather (Basane). Today, it's made from full-grain cowhide, making it even more resistant. This genuine work tool is still worn today. (Link)
